While we don’t know the exact cause of fibroid growth, we do that your diet can play a role in the growth of these non-cancerous uterine tumors. We also know that Black women are disproportionately affected by fibroids. And, according to researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine, we can suggest that Black women who add dairy to their fibroid diet plan may lower their risk for developing these tumors. Here’s what you need to know.
In this study from the Sloane Epidemiology Center at Boston University School of Medicine, based on evidence gathered from the larger Black Women’s Health Study, researchers noticed that, on average, Black women consume less daily dairy servings than white women. (They noted that the lower intake of dairy could be the result of higher instances of lactose intolerance for women of African American descent.)
While that decrease in dairy servings could help digestion for Black women who struggle to digest dairy products, it also creates gaps in their calcium, phosphorous and magnesium consumption. And that may help explain the higher instances of fibroid development in the African American community, since Black women decreased their tumor risk by 30% when they changed their fibroid diet to include four daily servings of dairy products.
Now, it’s important to remember that not all dairy products will be equally beneficial to your health. In fact, full-fat dairy products are actually considered some of the worst foods for fibroids, since they may worsen existing symptoms or even contribute to tumor growth. As such, you should be selective about the items you consume, choosing low fat milk and yogurt products over high calorie cheeses or sugary ice cream.
While consuming more dairy products could help lower fibroid risk for Black women, diet alone may not be enough to prevent tumor growth. And, if you already have fibroid symptoms, you may need to seek intervention that goes beyond dietary changes in order to find lasting relief.
