Are There Less Invasive Fibroid Treatments?

Posted on July 21, 2024

If you're starting to explore fibroid treatments, you may wish to choose minimally invasive options. Luckily, there are a range of options to choose from, including medications and Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). The one that works best for you may depend on your lifestyle, along with the size and location of your uterine tumors. Here's what you need to know.

Non-Invasive Fibroid Treatments

Women with small or asymptomatic you may avoid treatment altogether, unless you wish to become pregnant in the near future. During that time, you may also decide to make changes to your exercise routine and your diet, in order to lower estrogen levels and reduce the risk of fibroid growth.

Choosing Medications

If non-invasive fibroid treatments don't offer enough relief, you may wish to explore medications that can manage your symptoms. One such option is Lupron, or other medications that induce medical menopause. However, such options can trigger very unpleasant side effects. In fact, when Julianna Margulies chose this treatment for her uterine tumors, she told Women’s Health magazine, “I would be on the set of ER and I would literally sweat all my makeup off. The night sweats were to the point where I would have to change my sheets, put towels down, change my pajamas. I could not believe what I was in store for."

Prefer a medication with lesser side effects? Some women are able to manage their symptoms with birth control pills. But they won't reduce the size of your tumors, and could even trigger fibroid growth. As such, you may prefer a minimally-invasive procedure to treat fibroids.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) in Georgia is a minimally-invasive procedure to shrink fibroids by reducing blood flow to the tumors. UFE is an ideal fibroid treatment for women who need relief but want to avoid surgery and reduce their medical costs. However, for those who are not UFE candidates, surgical treatment may be necessary.

Fibroid Treatments Involving Surgery

In some cases, it may be necessary to have myomectomy surgery, in which tumors are removed individually, or hysterectomy surgical to remove the uterus. But you may be able to avoid these invasive fibroid treatments by exploring your candidacy for UFE. And you can do that by requesting a consultation at our fibroid center in Georgia.
