If you have uterine fibroids, “How can I shrink my fibroids naturally?” may be your top question. And, to help you get answers, we can highlight certain lifestyle changes that can help manage fibroid symptoms. At the same time, you must remember that these steps won’t get rid of your growths. To do that, you’ll need to choose a more permanent treatment option.
Now, we know that may sound scary. But we offer minimally invasive fibroid treatment in Atlanta; called UFE, it’s a non-surgical procedure that shrinks fibroids and relieves disruptive symptoms. And, in a minute, we’ll explain how this procedure works. First, though, we’ll take a closer look at these growths that form in your uterus
These non-cancerous tumors form in your uterine cavity, within its muscle walls, or attached to its exterior, sometimes via stalk-like structure. Some fibroids are small, measuring at about 1mm in diameter, while others grow to diameters well over 10 cm or even larger.
Uterine fibroids form from muscle cells and connective tissue. Depending on the size or location of your fibroids, you may not develop any symptoms. In fact, you may not even know they’re there. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for many women, though. And, if your fibroids are symptomatic, you may experience long and heavy periods; pain with sexual intercourse; or many other symptoms.
Luckily, having fibroids won’t increase your risk for developing uterine cancer. Still, they can interfere with fertility, pregnancy and more. As a result, many women look for ways to shrink their fibroids, or to get rid of them for good.
If you are searching for less invasive ways to address your fibroid symptoms, you may find relief through these lifestyle changes. However, while they can relieve some unwanted symptoms, most won’t be able to actually shrink your fibroids naturally.
Estrogen is produced and stored in fat cells. And, while we don’t know why fibroids grow, we do know there is a link between excess estrogen levels and fibroid development. So, if you lose weight—and reduce the number of fat cells in your body—you could lower your estrogen levels and possibly limit further fibroid growth.
The food you eat can also impact your fibroid symptoms. That’s why you’ll want to choose fibroid friendly foods such as leafy greens or beta-carotene rich sweet potatoes. And be sure to steer clear of the worst foods for fibroids, which you can review here.
Research suggests that calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus may help improve fibroid symptoms. Plus, women who already have fibroids may be able to naturally shrink them by increasing their Vitamin D intake. And, if one of your symptoms is terrible period pain, you may find relief by taking magnesium or omega-3 fatty acids such as fish oil.
Engaging in regular exercise could help you boost your mood naturally. And, it could help you reach a healthy weight, further making it easier to cope with symptoms of fibroids. Dealing with acute pelvic or period pain? Warm compresses on the stomach and back could offer relief. As could hot soaks in a tub, or gentle yoga flows.
While the tips highlighted up until now can relieve your symptoms, they are unlikely to get rid of your fibroids. Only medical intervention can accomplish that goal. But that doesn’t mean you’ll have to have surgery. After all, while many women choose hysterectomy or myomectomy to treat fibroids, there is a far less invasive option. And it’s called Uterine Fibroid Embolization, a treatment we proudly offer at our fibroid center in Atlanta.
UFE is a minimally-invasive alternative to surgical fibroid treatments. During the embolization procedure, we’ll gently numb a patch of skin in your wrist or thigh to gently insert a small tube into the artery. Next, with the help of guiding x-ray images, we’ll move that tube to the arteries that feed your fibroids. Once there, we can use the tube to block the flow of your blood to the fibroids, with the help of injected embolic particles. Now, we’ll be able to ‘starve’ your fibroids, until they shrink or disappear entirely.
How effective is UFE as a method for shrinking uterine fibroids? Our UFE success rate runs between 80 and 95%. As such, most women see their symptoms—and their fibroids—disppear after treatment.
Because every woman is unique, UFE won’t be the right choice for every patient. However, if you are living with uterine growths and hope to find a less invasive way to shrink your fibroids, Uterine Fibroid Embolization is a great option to consider—unless you’re currently pregnant, since can’t schedule a UFE procedure when expecting.
